Welcome to the official website of Toby Clarke. 


Toby has had an extensive career in  theatre, TV and film as a Director, Playwright and Acting Coach spanning over 18 years. He has most recently directed the Olivier Award Nominated Warheads at Park Theatre, he is currently Rep Company Director at Theatre Peckham, Elders Company Director at Southwark Playhouse and  Young Company Director Director at Stratford East.

He has produced work nationally as a Writer/Director and as an Acting Coach has worked for the BBC. Toby has supported a number of actors to gain representation with top agents, including Troika, Curtis Brown and Lou Coulson Associates.

Toby has had the privilege of training and mentoring a number of now established actors including BAFTA Nominee Ruth Madeley, Seraphina Beh (Eastenders, Bush Theatre), Ria Zmitrowicz (Three Girls, Royal Court, Almeida Theatre), Jamael Westman (Hamilton), Milly Zero (Eastenders ), Michael Salami (Hollyoaks) & Severine Howell Meri.

DIRECTOR

Toby trained as a Director and Dramaturg at the Central School of Speech and Drama and then with the National Theatre Studio.


As a Freelance Director, Toby has produced work with NYT, Southwark Playhouse, Ovalhouse and Lyric Hammersmith.  He directed Warheads by Taz Skylar at the Park Theatre in August 2019 which has been nominated for an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement and received unanimous ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Critical Acclaim.

During Lockdown, Toby worked with Stratford East to produce, Those of Hero Figures, 3 short films about he impact of Covid-19 on Key Workers' children.

Toby is co founder of Sketty Theatre (sketty.org.uk), an interdisciplinary production company, fusing text, puppetry and movement. Their work toured nationally to the Bristol Old Vic Studio, Ustinov Studio and the New Wimbledon to name a few, producing 4 critically-acclaimed new plays. Their work was developed with the support of Soho theatre, Ovalhouse and the NT Studio and was frequently funded by Arts Council England and The Peggy Ramsay Foundation

Toby was shortlisted for the Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting in 2013 with IMAM and then Longlisted for the same award this year for Me.


With Sketty Theatre he was twice awarded Time Out Critics Choice with Imogen.


His latest piece, The Eden Effect, was performed at the Camden People's Theatre in May 2019 and The Curve Leicester in October. His next play, Making Fatiha, will was also performed at CPT, next touring to the Luton Hat Factory in 2020.


He is currently developing a new Musical, Borrowed, with Composer Roly Botha And is under commission with UCL and The Bloomsbury Theatre.

Each year, Toby offers affordable private coaching (one to one and workshops). This can be geared towards Drama School auditions, professional castings, self tapes or if you’re just wanting to brush up on a particular area of your craft.

He specializes in Naturalism, Shakespeare and Contemporary Text.
